experiment 1:
date: sept 29
time: 12-1
site: moksha yoga winnipeg hot room
duration: 1 hour
cycles: 4
abstract:
the liquid crystal thermometer will sense the temperature variations of the arm during a one hour yoga practice. the temperature will depend on the ambient air temperature of the room, the internal temperature of the heated body, and the different postures which higher and lower heart beat, cut off circulation, and quicken and slow the breath.
synopsis:
temperature of room:
1200: 37c
1220: 38c
1240: 38c
0100: 39c
temperature of arm:
pre-class: 34c
1200: 36c
1210: 37c
1220: 36c
1230: 38c
1240: 39c
1250: 37c
0100: 36c
peak temperature was during the abdominals section and vinyassa where the head is lower than the torso. the heart beat increases, which heats of body as the breath works harder to compensate for extra-activity.
discovery:
the surface arm temperature did vary more than i excepted. but unfortunately the body did not affect the room temperature as much as when there are much more ppl in the room. the more ppl in the room the higher the humidity in the room, making it feel hotter, but also the air temperature increases as the bodies release heat above the temperature of the room, and give off radiant heat 'cooking' the room temperature, as it maintains the heat.
during the specific 'eagle pose' all blood is cut off to the arms, lowering its temperature. the arm read '36c after this pose, when before the pose read 38c.
the room acts as a 'heat sink' getting hotter throughout the class, and throughout the day actually.
morning classes are colder than night classes.
next time:
how can the room be more responsible to my individual body?
-smaller volume of unescapable space
-variable temperature (no auto temperature)
-heat up more within.
september 27
time :
site: arch2 entrance way
heat rises, not escaping through the down stairway, but there is a glass door which prevents heat from escaping upstairs. there will be a small flow of ppl entering, although there is construction being done outside the door so i dont expect much traffic.
poly cyclical:
a) sun path, varying light entering the space from outside, and changing the temperature of the concrete floor.
**video camera in elevation- (will capture record this sun path, and the light path)
b) the second cycle is that of the body moving threw meditative repeating sequence of movements.
c) short short cycle of the breath.
**video record (sound of this breath cycle.)
poly temporal:
a) the cycle of the sun is temporal.
b) the cycle of the heat variation is temporal (will return back to normal after the experiment is concluded)
c) breath in, ex is temporal, but repeating
poly scalar:
the buildling:
a) exterior glass will change temp w sun path
b) interior glass will change temp w sun path and body heat
the body:
c) internal body will vary in temp
d) external body surface on skin will vary in temp
c) different surfaces will heat/cool variably.
method:
movement of whole routine will be one and a half hour.
record with one small flashlight on chest, forearm, hip, one small flashlight on leg, one small flashlight on ankle.
attach tripod to ladder, and take the picture from above, 1.5 hour exposure time.
video record movement : (for sound of breath, time, and sunpath light pattern) for duration of 1.5 hours.
each time i do a vinyassa,
record:
shoulder temp
forearm temp
hip temp
leg temp
ankle temp.
in that order. after that oral spoken readings are taken, helper will oral say temperature of interior air temperature, glass temperature, and outside temperature.
a regular glass thermometer will detect air temp
a digital temp probe. will detect exterior temperature in which the probe is suctioned to the exterior air with a little cord (the helper can easily read the temp from inside).
the glass temperature will be read with a liquid crystal thermometer.
these records will then be gathered on a chart:
time: thing: temperature
1pm shoulder 34
1pm forearm 34
1pm hip 35
1 pm leg 37
1pm ankle 39
1 pm in air 39
1pm glass 38
1 pm out air 39
0105pm
0118pm, etc
humidity: also the video and experiment will also note the change in humidity, sweatiness of the body, or steam on window, inside? outside? raining? sunny? cloudy? windy?
and also the video will record the traffic flow of people, by:
-time of occurance
-direction (where did they go? from outside to upstairs, downstairs to outside, etc?)
-quantity
-duration (watched me do yoga? didnt care? walked fast? ran? dragged feet? laughed? etc.)
