experiment 2.3 / cholesteryl ester liquid crystal thermometer closer look

Cholesteric liquid crystals contain mixtures of molecules that align in layers. Stacks of layers are rotated with respect to one another similar to DNA, spiral staircases, or screw threads. The rotation between layers increases with temperature. A color will be reflected when the pitch, the distance between layers that have the same orientation, is approximately equal to the color's wavelength of light. Since the pitch changes with temperature, the color changes with temperature.

layered in thin flat layers, liquid crystals will record temperature per unit degree C corresponding to the color change. fish tank thermometers are meant to be applied flat to a surface. but i suspect since the stickers are already flat, suspended in air, they will reveal the corresponding color to air temperature.

i explore suspending the fish tank thermometers in air, along the grid on site.

the thermometers are stringed corresponding to the head, the shoulder, the forearm, the core, the leg, and the calf; the surface body parts i recorded during experiment 2. these area temperatures seem to to critical in my experiment in sensing the micro-climatic nature of this space.
